Food Supplements - what obligations do I have according to the applicable regulations?

Food supplements, which are also commonly referred to as ingestibles, health supplements, dietary supplements or nutraceuticals, are regulated under general food law laid down in Regulation (EC) 178/2002, and more specifically by Directive 2002/46/EC on Food Supplements in the EU.

The RFBO is primarily responsible

All Food Business Operators (FBOs) active on the EU market are legally regarded as responsible for ensuring that the requirements of EU Food Law are met within the food business activities that are under their control (production, distribution and/or marketing). The exact obligations and responsibilities depend on your role(s) in the supply chain.

The Responsible Food Business Operator (RFBO) is the primary entity responsible for the safety and compliance of food products placed on the EU market. The RFBO is the operator that makes the products available on the EU market.
